Avalanche (AVAX) has recently seen a significant price increase, gaining over 16% in the last week. After nearly six months of downtrend, AVAX appears to be in the early stages of a trend reversal. On August 5th, the altcoin reached a low of $17.29, its lowest price in nine months. Since then, it has rebounded with a 45% increase to around $25.25.
This price movement comes after a flash crash below $18, part of a broader market sell-off following Bitcoin's correction on August 18th. Despite the recent gains, AVAX has been trailing behind the wider market since peaking at $65 on March 18th.
Several factors may be contributing to the recent uptick in AVAX's price. One positive development is related to the Avalanche token unlock schedule. Investors have noticed a big drop in token unlocks events after the end of 2024. Token unlocks are often perceived as creating selling pressure, as new tokens are released into circulation. A decrease in unlock events could, therefore, reduce this pressure and foster a more favorable environment for long-term growth and development within the Avalanche ecosystem.
In addition to the token unlocking news, positive sentiment has been bolstered by recent announcements from major financial institutions. On August 22nd, Grayscale Investments revealed the launch of a new investment fund focused on AVAX, called the “Grayscale Avalanche Trust.” This fund provides investors with exposure to the growing Avalanche ecosystem.
On the same day, Franklin Templeton, a global asset management firm, expanded its Franklin OnChain US Government Money Fund to the Avalanche network. This fund allows institutional investors to access a blockchain-integrated record-keeping system, highlighting Avalanche's appeal to traditional finance players.
These announcements, while not directly impacting AVAX’s fundamentals, have sparked optimism among investors and could be driving the recent price surge. The market's response to these developments is reflected in the increase in AVAX’s trading volume and the liquidations of short positions as its funding rate turned briefly positive.
For AVAX to maintain its upward momentum, it will be important to see sustained increases in spot buying volumes. If such momentum continues, AVAX could potentially move past its current resistance levels in the $25 to $27 range and aim for a higher price target between $28 and $33. As with many cryptocurrencies, news events, partnerships, and ecosystem developments will likely continue to influence AVAX's price action in the near term.
