The Avalanche Foundation, known for its blockchain platform Avalanche, has launched a new Visa cryptocurrency card called the Avalanche Card. This innovative card will allow users to spend cryptocurrencies easily wherever Visa is accepted. Announced on October 21 through Avalanche's social media, the card aims to simplify the use of digital assets in everyday transactions.
The Avalanche Card supports multiple cryptocurrencies, including Circle's USD Coin (USDC), Wrapped AVAX (wAVAX), and BENQI Liquid Staked AVAX (sAVAX). Users can choose between a physical or virtual card version, making it convenient for different purchases. The card is designed to be linked to a self-custody wallet, meaning users maintain full control over their assets without the need for third parties to manage their funds. Each asset held on the card is linked to a unique address, ensuring greater security.
According to the official website, the Avalanche Card does not report user activity to credit bureaus, offering a level of privacy that many traditional credit cards do not. Despite being introduced by the Avalanche Foundation, the card is provided by Rain Liquidity, a financial technology services company. It’s important to note that the Avalanche Card and Rain Liquidity are not banks and are not insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). This means that while the card allows for seamless crypto spending, users should be aware of the risks associated with the volatility of digital currencies, as they are not legal tender and may lose value.
The Avalanche Card will initially be available to residents in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, there are certain restrictions; for example, residents or citizens of countries such as Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Russia, North Korea, Syria, and Iran, and regions like Crimea, Luhansk, and Donetsk are not eligible to sign up, regardless of where they currently reside.
This isn’t the first time a crypto payment card has been introduced in the industry. Several companies have released cards that allow users to spend cryptocurrencies directly from their self-custody wallets. One example is Tangem's Visa card, which claims to offer similar functionality.
The Avalanche Card has no spending fees, but users are encouraged to review the card's terms and conditions for a complete list of service fees. The card’s easy integration with self-custody wallets and its global usability position it as a significant step toward making crypto transactions more accessible for users around the world.
