August 29, 2024 — Meta Platforms is set to launch a new pair of mixed reality glasses, tentatively named “Puffin,” aimed at challenging the dominance of Apple’s Vision Pro in the augmented reality market. According to a report from The Information, Meta’s Puffin glasses are scheduled to debut in 2027 and will offer a more compact and affordable alternative to existing mixed reality devices.
The Puffin glasses are designed to be significantly smaller and lighter than Meta’s current Quest headsets, which require handheld controllers. Instead, the new glasses will feature advanced controls using hand gestures and eye movements, streamlining user interaction and enhancing the overall experience.
Unlike the Apple Vision Pro, which is priced at $3,500 and is known for its large, headset-style design, the Puffin glasses are expected to be more budget-friendly. This could potentially broaden their appeal and make mixed-reality technology more accessible to a wider audience.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has indicated that the Puffin glasses will bridge the gap between current products such as the Ray-Ban Meta, which lacks a display, and the more cumbersome VR headsets. The new glasses are anticipated to feature full-field-of-view (FOV) holographic displays, enabling seamless real-time communication, informational overlays, and a heads-up display akin to those used in video games or military equipment.
Developing the Puffin glasses is part of Meta’s broader strategy to advance in the mixed reality sector. The company’s Reality Labs division has invested heavily in research and development, spending over $59.9 billion since its establishment in 2019. Despite this significant investment, Reality Labs reported $353 million in sales revenue for Q2 of this year.
Meta’s chief financial officer, Susan Li, remains optimistic about the future, anticipating a meaningful reduction in operating losses for Reality Labs as new products are released. Li's confidence is buoyed by the promising prospects of the Puffin glasses and other upcoming innovations.
With the Puffin glasses, Meta aims to set a new benchmark in the mixed-reality market by offering a device that is both innovative and user-friendly. The glasses are expected to provide a more seamless integration of digital and physical worlds, positioning Meta as a strong competitor to high-end mixed reality devices like the Apple Vision Pro.
As Meta continues to push the boundaries of technology, the unveiling of the Puffin glasses in 2027 will be a key moment in the evolution of mixed reality, potentially transforming how users interact with both virtual and real-world environments.
