PancakeSwap, one of the largest decentralized exchanges (DEX), recently announced plans to launch its v4 update after surpassing an impressive $836 billion cumulative trading volume. The platform, which operates using an Automated Market Maker (AMM) model, has locked in a total value (TVL) of around $1.72 billion as of September 20, 2024. While this number is significant, it's a decrease from it's all-time high of $7.16 billion, recorded in May 2021, according to data from DefiLlama.
Over the years, PancakeSwap’s TVL has gradually declined, reflecting broader market conditions and competition within the DeFi space. However, the exchange still serves over 43 million unique addresses, highlighting its continued popularity. To stay competitive and enhance the user experience, PancakeSwap is rolling out its v4 update, which aims to address several key challenges faced by current AMM models.
The v4 update is designed to improve liquidity provision, scalability, and interoperability. PancakeSwap aims to fix some of the significant issues with existing AMMs, such as inflexible pricing models, limited trading features compared to centralized exchanges, and impermanent loss, which has been a major concern for liquidity providers. Additionally, high on-chain gas fees, which make transactions expensive, are another issue PancakeSwap hopes to mitigate with this update.
Chef Kids, the head of PancakeSwap, explained in an interview with Cointelegraph that v4 will introduce dynamic fee tiers and advanced trading tools to lower costs and improve the overall experience for users. By doing so, the exchange hopes to attract more participants, improve market depth, and lead to better price execution. The goal is to increase capital efficiency, benefiting both traders and liquidity providers.
To ensure PancakeSwap stays ahead of the curve, the protocol plans to expand its DEX offering across more blockchain networks. PancakeSwap is already available on nine chains, including BNB Chain, Ethereum, Aptos, Polygon zkEVM, ZKsync Era, and others. By focusing on expanding to additional chains, PancakeSwap is targeting increased accessibility and better trading efficiency.
As part of the development of v4, PancakeSwap has launched a $500,000 developer program aimed at attracting top developers to build innovative projects on the platform. This initiative includes a “v4 Hookathon” event, where developers can submit their ideas for the upcoming v4 release, with submissions open until September 30, 2024.
By improving user experience and expanding its reach across emerging blockchain networks, PancakeSwap aims to fill a crucial gap in the decentralized exchange market, making trading more accessible and efficient for its global user base. The upcoming v4 release promises to be a significant step forward in achieving these goals.
